How you can help:

JOIN THE COMMUNINTY.  We are always on the lookout for people to join in our work as full-time community members. People interested in our work in the long term come as prospective community membersinterns. We promote summer internships to college students, but interns have come at all ages and at all times of the year. In all cases, live-in volunteers receive room, board, and, if desired, a small stipend. who join our work for a trial period of several months and then decide with community if they will make a commitment to join up for a longer period, usually six months or a year. Others who want to try out our work and life for a smaller, specified period of time (usually one to four months) can come as interns.

VOLUNTEER FOR HOUSE DUTY.  For those who live in Duluth and are interested in part-time volunteering, we have three main opportunities. House Duty is the basic task of hospitality; depending on circumstance and the volunteers interest it can involve anything from chatting with guests and answering the phone, to working on maintenance projects, to cleaning house and cooking. The essential element, though, is being committed to being at the house and to welcoming guests. Both the Olive Branch family house and Dorothy Day men's house often seek new house duty volunteers to come as needed or on a regular schedule.

BECOME A MEAL ANGEL.  Being a Meal Angel means providing dinner for one (or even both!) of our two emergency hospitality houses. The degree of involvement ranges from cooking at home and dropping off a meal to coming early in the afternoon and cooking in our kitchens, then staying to break bread with us and our guests. Some angels sign up occasionally, others are on the schedule monthly.

HELP WITH THE FOOD RUN.  Sometimes we can use help with our Food Run, on which we collect food from local grocers and restaurants for our use and for the use of the Damiano Center's soup kitchen. We make the run three times a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.

RESIST VIOLENCE.  You help greatly when you stand with us in resisting violence. Our weekly peace vigil at the downtown U.S. Army recruiting office (408 W Superior St.) is a good place to start-Thursdays 12-12:45 PM. Keep an eye out for special events on the “projects” page and in our newsletter.

DONATE!  Finally, we are always appreciative of financial support. About half of our budget comes from donations (the other half is contributed from the wages of live-in volunteers). Of donations, the majority comes from family and individual supporters. A smaller portion comes from supporting parishes.
